CONTRAST & GESTALT
24.08.2021 - 31.08.2021 (Week 1-2)

fig 1.1 Contrast Exercise (Final) JPG, Week 2 (31/08/2021)
fig 1.2 Contrast Exercise (Final) PDF, Week 2 (31/08/2021)

RATIONALE:
The reason why I choose Merida is mostly of her colour combination, orange and aquamarine - teal. They're a complimentary colour which make a good contrast. The orange is her hair and the aquamarine - teal are the forest scenery. I want to show contrast by using color approach. Besides the orange and teal color, the vibrant color of the hair and the background also creates a good contrast to the face, which is the main vocal point.

fig 1.4 Gestalt Exercise (Final) PDF, Week 2 (31/08/2021)

RATIONALE:
The design is about a woman hugging on earth, which is her place to live. The woman holds closely the earth because she loves her place. The mask refers to the COVID-19 pandemic. She's hugging the earth because she miss her earth being fine. I made this design regarding to the COVID-19 outbreak experience.

EMPHASIS & MOVEMENT
07.09.2021 - 14.09.2021 (Week 3-4)

fig 1.5 Emphasis Exercise (Final) JPG, Week 4 (14/09/2021)
fig 1.6 Emphasis Exercise (Final) PDF, Week 4 (14/09/2021)

RATIONALE:
It tells a story about death. I use the rose as the emphasis because rose have the meaning to bring loose to a funeral. Over all color of roses, I choose red, because it has more connection to the dripping blood. The red dripping blood on the hand, refers to human's death. It can also be represented as something that tells "human's blood make plants grow." Researchers said a decomposing human body release huge amount nutrition for plants to grow. We all know that, when our bodies dead, they'll started to decompose, which can make plants grow.  That's why, I made the flowers become to have color because of the dripping blood.

fig 1.7 Movement Exercise (Final) JPG, Week 4 (14/09/2021)
fig 1.7 Movement Exercise (Final) PDF, Week 4 (14/09/2021)

RATIONALE:
I made it to look like a parents who are blindfolded, which represent on parents who can't understand their child. I make them too look like as if everything have to be their child's doing, their child took all responsibility. The boy in the back as a child who act as the toxic parenting victim. I want to show the child's emotion, fear. The books themself represented as "demands," it can be achievement, works, economy, health, etc. It also contain both of the principles, movement and repetition.

HARMONY & UNITY
21.09.2021 - 28.09.2021 (Week 5-6)

fig 1.8 Harmony Exercise (Final) JPG, Week 6 (28/09/2021)
fig 1.9 Harmony Exercise (Final) PDF, Week 6 (28/09/2021)

RATIONALE:
The topic is about human meat dishes. Inspired from my local news about a restaurant that sells human meat mixed in their dishes that I read, I want to remind that when we buy a food please be careful and mindful of the ingredients. Some food may look similar to normal food, but who can really know what is it. The harmony principle located in the mood, theme, placement of the food, and kind of food that I drew.

fig 1.10 Unity Exercise (Final) JPG, Week 6 (28/09/2021)
fig 1.11 Unity Exercise (Final) PDF, Week 6 (28/09/2021)

RATIONALE:
In this unity exercise, I want to make something that describe "Death is a Painful Loss." I made it circular to make more sense of unity, because we should gather into one to give prayer to the one that leave. I make the background looks like a hole to make it like going to somewhere unknown, out of our reach. It also can mean as a hole used to hurried the coffin. I make the coffin white so it doesn't blend with the background and has a contrast with the background. White coffin also known to describe a purity. I used different colors of hand to give the impression about "not only certain race," I want to make it universal. I use roses as the flower because most people know that roses are iconic for funeral, and the meaning of roses is to bring loose to a funeral. Roses also have thorns which also describe the "pain" more. I intentionally make scars and dripping blood over the hands to describe the "pain of a loss."

Project 1: Self Portrait
05.10.2021 - 12.10.2021 (Week 7 - Week 8) : 2 weeks

fig 2.1 Self Portrait (Final) JPG, Week 8 (12/10/2021)
fig 2.2 Self Portrait (Final) PDF, Week 8 (12/10/2021)

RATIONALE:
I want to show people my "self portrait" by showing about my feelings, the things that I feel that people don't see. It isn't the self that I want to represent to people, I just want to show what my actual self looks like. It's about a little girl, I drew a little girl because I want to show my "childish" side. I make it using digital draw cause I don't like to do something to hard and complicated. I also like digital painting. I drew myself as a broken porcelain doll, to represent the side that people always see, a beautiful thing, but actually it's broken. I drew butterfly wings to show a form of "metaphor" to show that I'm tired of being tied and controlled for every move and decision I make. The shocked face shows a tiring face. The red ropes shows about "controlling", and I use red color to define terms of "blood," means I mostly got controlled by parents. I also added some pointing hands, because I want to represent "demands, expectations". I made the background look like waiting in time, to show that I've been longing for freedom for a long time.

Project 2: Sense of Place
19.10.2021 - 26.10.2021 (Week 9 - Week 10) : 2 weeks

fig 3.1 Sense of Place (Final) JPG, Week 10 (26/10/2021)
fig 3.2 Sense of Place (Final) PDF, Week 10 (26/10/2021)

RATIONALE:
What I made is a design that represent a little mask shop in Venice. I want to represent my feeling of the place by doing so. The created design use principle of contrast, harmony, and emphasis—which is the main element I want to show. I want to emphasis it on the masks and the little girl, as if the place made me feel like I spend my night interacting with them and the world only emphasised on us. I use the dark color scheme to let the classical feeling out. I use yellow as my light to give a warmth feeling of the place.

Project 3: Visual Analysis
02.11.2021 - 23.11.2021 (Week 11 - Week 14) : 4 weeks

fig 4.1 Visual Analysis PDF, Week 14 (23/11/2021)

fig 4.3 Visual Analysis Project (Final) PDF, Week 14 (23/11/2021)

Rationale:
Inspired form Daiyou Uonome's “Liar Doll”, I intended to express the idea of "pleasure of being dominated". Highlighting the words; love, lust, dominated, pleasure, desire that I found from the main reference as the idea.

I made a illustration artwork showing a girl being choked by someone, but still, instead of suffering, she’s pleasured by it. It’s similar with the idea of “masochist” word; someone who enjoy activity that happen to be painful or tedious.

I choose her being choked up on the neck, because the act of suffocating is a representation of dominance. It’s also an act of sexual asphyxiation; act of choking someone as sexual pleasure. The thorns also act as supporting elements to show the “painfulness”. I drew her under the blanket to give the sense of being “wrapped” or “tied”; powerless enough to move. The pleasure is expressed by the girl’s facial expression. I choose to draw a facial expression that represent both pleasure and suffer, to tell something like, “It’s actually hurt (suffering), but I really like it (pleasure).” It’s also filled with flowers, specifically roses as a representation of love. The red color used as I thought it’s the best color to represent sense of love, passion, desire, heat, sexuality, lust.

REFLECTION
<back to top>

My past school has taught me about some of the design principles, so the concept isn't something new about it, but I learnt design principles better in this module, because it's specified per principles. The new thing that I learnt is about gestalt, I never know that gestalt exist, all I know is only just as far as "that kind of thing".

I enjoyed the module so far, because it let me illustrate anything I want. It's a form of self expression for me, and it isn't limited to several methods, such like photography, illustrations, it can be anything I want. I noticed that I used illustrations mostly as my form of self expression, because it feels easy, fast, and I'm used to that, so it made me express myself easily.

I enjoyed the varieties, although because of that, it's hard to make decision sometimes. For example, in my final project, I couldn't decide what should I go with and it wasted lots of times.đŸ™ˆ

I also noticed that as time went on I really enjoyed making things that has a deep meaning / representative meaning in it. It feels satisfying for me. I also noticed that students in my class have different kind of art styles. I noticed most of my art styles are rounded and curved, and it what makes it as a characteristic. I'm feeling a little bit confidence.

By learning this module I have learnt about myself better, also I got a deeper knowledge about design principles, and it's very helpful as it also helps in doing my other class assignments. I'm very grateful about that.
