LIST

LECTURES

Mr. Charles asked us to watch a lecture video about self portrait. Ms. Jinchi firstly gave an introduction of the lecture about human being. Humans are social creature who have to interact with people. Our way of interact make people see ourself. Sometimes what we want to interact is different from what we interact to people. By interacting, we let people see us, like our personality, emotions, etc. The way our parents see us can be different from the way our friends see us.

Then, Ms. Jinchi introduced us to a self portrait. so what's a self portrait?

Ms. Jinchi played us a video by Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

So, answered by Ms. Jinchi, self portrait is a representation of our self in the form of drawing / painting / sculpture / design. It's a visual depiction of self.

Adding from skillshare.com, self portrait is an artwork that describe the author, like how we see ourselves,  how're we feeling, how we want others to see us. It's not always about creating a self realistic image of ourself.

Then, Ms. Jinchi gave some examples and inspiration for our self portraits.

VISUAL RESEARCH

First, I did some understanding on what's a "self portrait"?

"A self-portrait is a representation of an artist that is drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by that artist." - Wikipedia

So, it's basically a representation of ourself. In the lecture that have been provided, Ms. Jinchi said that self portrait can be expressed through painting / drawing / sculpture / design. So, I searched all the possible model of self portrait.

What I get:
I found out that self portrait illustrated the artist visuals. But out of that, it can be a media to express artist certain personalities / expressions / what do the artist think about something. Thus, I began to explore more about various types of self portrait. While I'm scrolling Pinterest, I found this:
fig. 16, Dark Self Portrait 1 (https://pin.it/5Rm8uDc)

I'm very interested in this kind of style, I'm inspired by the author braveness on showing the dark side of him/herself. I want to be that brave. Then, I began to look more, and find this inspiration.

I found fig.17 art is very interesting. It reminds me of a K-Drama I watched some times ago. I'm actually not quite confidence with my art style, so these illustrations gave me some motivation to be more confident.

IDEA EXPLORATION

SKETCHING

So, I began inspired to make something that "shows" my dark side, my dark and negative emotions, the side of myself that others don't see. So, here're my drafts. They're actually the same but have slight differences. The girl in the first sketch holds a doll, while the second holds a childish artwork. Then, the second sketch shows some hands pointing towards her, as if they're expecting / demanding something from her.

EXECUTION

So here's my attempt on giving her color, I started with base color:

(btw the color haven't been adjusted to be harmonious, so..)

fig. 24, Base II

I searched for a color palette with something similar like color on draft 1, so I found some and decide on this color palette that I got from Adobe Colors:

I adjust it a little, and add a little gradient, and here it is:

I darkened the color scheme a bit, and add some red ropes that tied her.

fig. 29, added rope

I added some points to show a more "control" in her.

Then, I adjusted the background a little, I decided to remove the doll / children painting because I think it's not necessary to add too much element.

Then, this's my final result:

Design Principles contained in the artwork:
  • Balance (Asymmetrical)
  • Emphasis
  • Contrast
  • Harmony
  • Repetition
I want to show people my "self portrait" by showing about my feelings, the things that I feel that people don't see. It isn't the self that I want to represent to people, I just want to show what my actual self looks like. It's about a little girl, I drew a little girl because I want to show my "childish" side. I make it using digital draw cause I don't like to do something to hard and complicated. I also like digital painting. I drew myself as a broken porcelain doll, to represent the side that people always see, a beautiful thing, but actually it's broken. I drew butterfly wings to show a form of "metaphor" to show that I'm tired of being tied and controlled for every move and decision I make. The shocked face shows a tiring face. The red ropes shows about "controlling", and I use red color to define terms of "blood," means I mostly got controlled by parents. I also added some pointing hands, because I want to represent "demands, expectations". I made the background look like waiting in time, to show that I've been longing for freedom for a long time.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 7:
  • Mr. Charles said it's a very strong and interesting idea, it shows the "hardships" and "struggles" the girl had experienced. It's already good, but need more modification, maybe add a scissor / knife / cutting tools to show more about the strings cut.
WEEK 8:
  • Independent Learning Week!

REFLECTION

WEEK 7:
From this assignment, I learnt more about myself. I become more aware with my feeling, and what I'm going through. I drew something that I feel not secure about. I drew my dark side. I noticed that I'm being braver for myself opening up and getting out from my past which tied me up and make me think negatively. I'm very happy to be able to "shout out" my feeling through my illustration.

WEEK 8:
I feel like I started to found what I like, my passion, even thought I think it's kind of weird. I found out that I really like to draw something "deep" with dark elements and childish style like I did. Different artists have different style too, and that's what make their style "unique". I want to start to become more confidence about my style.
