  • Topic 1.1 : Elements and Principles of Design

    Started from the first hour of the lecture, Dr. Charles explains us about the Design Principle's MIB. The MIB gives us the guidance about our learning journey. We were also expected to watch 1.1 and 1.2 lecture videos explained by Dr. Jinchi. Topic 1.1 is about elements and principles of design, while topic 1.2 is about Gestalt Theory and Contrast Theory.

    Visual communication main purpose is to communicate something to the target audience. Making effective use of design elements and principles can result in a design that conveys its true essence.

    There are several elements and principles of design, those are:

Elements take part as a building block, while elements are stacked, it can create principles.

fig. 2 example how to combine the element and principles, source: (http://www.wheelerarts.org/elements-and-principles-of-art.html)

  • POINT
fig. 3 point
    • Point is the most basic form of element.
    • If used repetitively will form line, or even three dimensional figures.
EXAMPLE:

fig. 4 Hanji Zoe Pointillism Art by Feral Fighter, source (https://www.deviantart.com/feralfighter/art/Pointillism-Hanji-Zoe-403532594)

    The author made the drawing using the most basic element, point. Using a group of dots/points, with different intensity, can make the drawing looks beautiful.
  • LINE
fig. 5 line
    • Not always a straight line.
    • Can indicate directions, boundaries, imply volumes/masses, suggest motion and emotion.
    • Can be grouped to create light and shadow.
fig. 6 Ligh and Dark Using Line, source: (https://id.pinterest.com/pin/27232772727075308/)
    • Many types of line can be used.

EXAMPLE:

    This creation can show that a grouped line can make a light and shadow effect on the drawing, even it's only two dimensional art. This drawing used curved lines which make the drawing looks like it has a motion in it. The lines make it as if the drawing flows to the top.

    • SHAPE

      fig. 9 geometric shape
      • fig. 10 organic shape

      • Two type of shape; geometric (precise, regular) and organic (irregular).
      • More visible when coloured/ given texture.
EXAMPLE:
fig. 11 design by Christine, source: (https://id.pinterest.com/pin/712553972296111203/)

    A lots of modern designs, similar to this design were made using organic shape. It can make designs to look more abstract and playful, especially if added with various colours.
EXAMPLE:
    This is an example of artwork using real texture. The artist combine painting and digital art to make this piece. The artist use dried acrylic paint as the texture.
  • SPACE
    • Indefinable, receptacle, the empty space
    • In picture, defined by edges.
    • From the outside we experience mass, while from the inside we experience volume.
    • In graphic design, there are two type of space; positive (filled space) and negative (empty space).
fig. 14 negative space (left) and positive space (right), source: (https://id.pinterest.com/pin/553028029221458002/)

EXAMPLE:
fig. 15 a photography by Vicki Mar, source: (https://www.flickr.com/photos/vmar/4421351409/)

    Using a lot of whitespace in this photograph, make the photograph looks more simple and minimalistic, which can enhance the simple object.
  • COLOUR

    • The light wavelights which we can see visually, that made from reflected source.
    • Human beings can only identify in term of this 3 variables, hue, value, and intensity.
COLOR DICTIONARY
Hue =Pure pigment
Value =Pure pigment + light/darkness
Intensity / Saturation=   Pure pigment + saturation/chroma
Color Scheme =Color grouping with harmony
Monochromatic =Based on color value and intesnity
Analogous =   Adjacent colour in colour wheel
Complementary =     Emphasised two opposite colour hues

  • Topic 1.2 : Contrast and Gestalt Theory

    • CONTRAST

    • Contrast is a theory which two different colours with have opposing hue, placed adjacent. Hence, this will give a visual interest and give more emphasis to a content.

    • GESTALT

    • Gestalt in Germany refers to "shape" or "form". This theory shown that, the human brain, which can detect patterns in things can made complex scenes to be reduced into simple shapes.
                  There are six main principles of this theory;
fig. 18 Type of Gestalt Theory source: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FryaH599ec0)

    • CONTINUATION
      • Seen the object as a continuous flow.
    • CLOSURE
      • Seen the complete shape by filling missing visual information.
fig. 20 The Sox Poster, source: (https://id.pinterest.com/pin/43558321369207460/)
    • SIMILARITY
      • Perceive elements with similar nature as a picture, shape, group of elements even they're separated.

    • PROXIMITY
      • Related design elements are placed together, unrelated items spaced apart..
f

    • SYMMETRY & ORDER
      • Symmetrical to each other, perceived as unified group.

    • FIGURE/GROUND
      • Either stand out in the front (the figure) or in the back (the background).

  • Topic 2 : Emphasis and Balance
    • BALANCE
      • Refers to the distribution of visual weight
      • Equal, but not always 100% the same on both sides (visual equilibrium of the elements make the design looks balanced.)
      • Can be;
        • Symmetrical
          1. EQUAL weight (can be horizontal/vertical)
          2. Equally arranged elements around central point = radial balance
          3. Approximate symmetry = same amount of elements but not 100% same on both side
fig. 25, Example of Symmetrical Balance, source; (https://id.pinterest.com/pin/488077678342123159/)

fig. 27, Example of Radial Balance, source; (https://shotkit.com/radial-balance/)
        • Asymmetrical
          1. UNEQUAL visual weight on each side of the composition
          2. One side can be dominant element, the other side less focal points
          3. Dynamic, evokes feeling of modernism, movement, energy, vitality
          4. Offer more visual variety, relationship between elements are complex

            How to Know Balance?
  • Rule of Thirds
Rule of Thirds means dividing your design into thirds, using two horizontal and vertical lines, which will create a nine parts with four intersection points. It'll look like this;

This video, which I got from Digital Photography and Imaging class helps me to understand Rule of Thirds more;

fig. 31, Rule of Thirds Trick, source; (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZVyNjKSr0M)

  • Golden Ratio
A guideline to determine a design's proportion to create an aesthetic and pleasing design to the eye. It's usually found in nature, but can be implied in design.

fig. 32, Golden Ratio, source; lecture video 2

    • EMPHASIS
      • Emphasis > used to create dominance
      • Various elements (e.g., colour, shapes / values), can be use to achieve dominance
fig. 34, Example of Emphasis, source; (https://pin.it/5BbTYto)
  • Topic 3 : Repetition and Movement
    • REPETITION
      • Make a design seems to look like it's active
      • Create rhythm and pattern within the work
      • Variety = to avoid monotony and to keep rhythm exciting and active
      • Can increase visual excitement by enriching surface interest
      • Should be consistent to make a theme
fig. 35, Example of Repetition, source; (https://pin.it/1a2lrEB)
    • MOVEMENT
      • The way a design leads (e.g., in, around, through a composition)
      • Occurs when : object seems moving
      • Comes from shapes, forms, curves that are used.
fig. 36, Example of Movement, source; (http://getdrawings.com/waterfall-pencil-drawing)
        • Hierarchy:
          • Direct viewers to the important part first
          • To communicate information and convey meaning
fig. 37, Example of Hierarchy, source; (https://visme.co/blog/visual-hierarchy/)
        • Alignment:
          • Placement of elements that edges line up along common rows/column/bodies along a common centre
          • Create a sense of unity and cohesion, contributes to the design's aesthetic and perceived stability
  • Topic 4 : Harmony and Unity
    • HARMONY
      • Involves the selection of elements that share common trait.
      • Becomes monotony without variety
      • Harmony = sense that all of the elements in your design fit together. (fit the same theme, aesthetic, style, or mood)
      • Harmony can have similar shapes (between left side and right side) and colour that equal each others
    • UNITY
      • Refers to the repetition of particular elements (can be colours, shapes or materials) to pull the look together
      • Occurs when the elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.
      • Can also be represented as many elements that unite and direct us to 1 point/detail
      • Analogues colour can make pic united
      • Unity and Harmony are similar but they have different roles
fig. 40, Example of Harmony, source; (https://pin.it/6pOM0j8)
    • SCALE
      • Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in a design or artwork
      • Refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure.
      • Actual measurement and visual estimates based on comparison.
      • Used to specify or illustrate details based on the relative sizes of objects.
      • Substantial deviation from a normal scale relationship can create dramatic results and visual interest within the design or composition
fig. 41, Example of Proportion, source; (https://kidcourses.com/principles-design-scale-proportion/)
    • PROPORTION
      • Refers to the size of the parts of an object in relation to other parts of the same object.
      • Proportion = relationship of two or more elements in a composition and how they compare to one another with respect to size, colour, quantity, degree, setting, etc.(i.e. ratio)
      • Harmony occurs when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity
      • The effective use of proportion often results in harmony and unity.
fig. 42, Example of Proportion, source; (https://kidcourses.com/principles-design-scale-proportion/)

  • Topic 5 : Symbol, Word and Image
    Humans have used the symbols to communicate a message of thought, an idea or concept even since the past.(e.g., marks in caves, hieroglyphs from Egypt). Symbols indicate brand in the form of a logo / icon that informs a product. Culturally and socially symbols remind of Timeless Concepts and values
    • SYMBOL
      • A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else (Cambridge Dictionary, 2020)
      • Symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, even a whole story (Eco, 1976 & Pettersson, 2015)
      • Categories of Symbols:
fig. 43, source: lecture video

1. Pictorial Symbols:
  • Image-related and simplified pictures
  • Useful for educational material (able to identify objects of study more easily because pictorial symbols are image-related and simplified pictures with the object.)
  • Example: inside human body draw, etc
2. Abstract Symbols:
  • Can look at the objects that they represent but have less details.
  • Example: symbols that we can see at the toilet, some road signs, etc
3. Arbitrary Symbols:
  • No resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent.
  • Invented with the meaning constructed
  • Mostly based on geometric shapes and colours.
  • Must be learnt first
  • Example: hospital sign, share symbol, logos like McD, Pepsi, etc
    • WORD and IMAGE
      • Imagery = vital part of design, be it print or digital.
      • Important to use suitable and relevant images when designing.
      • Choosing the right words = deepen the meaning of the design.
      • Suitable typeface, strategic positioning of the type will result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.
      • Typography is the design and arrangement of text to convey a message or concept.
      • A company's image can be reflected to the use of imagery and the typeface in publicity and promotional materials

VISUAL RESEARCH
- CONTRAST -
Contrast is a combination of different elements which make certain elements stand more.

- GESTALT -
Gestalt is a principle where our eye perceive what isn't there / our eye place thing as what we know. It's similar but not the same as eye trick.

- EMPHASIS -
Emphasis is a point of interest, which draws your attention to a certain part of a design. It can be because of the colour, shapes, or background.

- BALANCE -
Balance is a design which we divided into two part have the similar amount of elements.
fig. 47, Balance Example, source; (https://createartwithme.com/types-balance/)

- REPETITION -
Repetition is when an object/elements become repeated to make a pattern. It doesn't always have to be a pattern, it can be items/humans/characters, etc.

- MOVEMENT -
Movement is where our eye follow a certain element in the design. It can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the design.

fig. 49, Movement Example, source; (https://gomedia.com/tutorials/rule-motion/)

-HARMONY-
Harmony is more like a good composition made by combining some different elements but when you look at it, it looks like a same theme/ vibes/ feeling.
fig. 50, Harmony Example, source; (https://pin.it/6XDVHB0)

-UNITY-
Unity is similar to harmony, but the grouping is more emphasized, usually on center.

IDEA EXPLORATION
(back to top)

CONTRAST

When I think about contrast, the strongest idea in my mind is about colour. Speaking of it, to be honest I can't think anything. So, I decided to do some color research. After seeing various colour pallete, I found out that I like the idea of combining the colour orange and teal or maybe turquoise as they're vibrant colours. Then, I began to search some picture with orange and light blue as combination.

    I want to make something out of that colour, or something similar like that. I started to think more of what should I make. I suddenly remember a princess in Disney, yes, she's Merida.

    After doing some exploration, I started to make the sketch, and here it is;
fig. 54, Merida Sketch

    Then I give a colour to my work, and here is my final result of "contrast" assignment;

fig. 55, Merida Painted

    After that, I digitise my work using Photoshop, and here are the process and the result;
fig. 56, Process

fig. 57, Merida Digitised

    The reason why I choose Merida is mostly of her colour combination, orange and aquamarine - teal. They're a complimentary colour which make a good contrast. The orange is her hair and the aquamarine - teal are the forest scenery.

GESTALT

As the design for the gestalt principle, I want to make something that's a reality, not a fiction or something surreal. I want to make something similar to the current situation of outbreak, that I feel sometimes. I don't know how to interpret it with gestalt, so I search some inspiration in Pinterest.
fig. 59, Gestalt Brainstorming, source; (https://id.pinterest.com/pin/331999803783143188/)

fig. 60, Gestalt Brainstorming, source; (https://id.pinterest.com/pin/236720524140532934/)

I was inspired with the lady picture, so, I decided to make a gestalt using closure. I came with an idea of a girl lying around in her bed feeling numbness covered with blanket (which will get the closure effect). By doing this, I thought I emphasis the object and her emotion. So, I decided to surf on Pinterest on some poses reference and I found one.

fig. 61, Woman Sleeping Reference (Mirrored), source; (https://pin.it/32VkC9o)

fig. 62, Sleeping Reference, source; (https://pin.it/4bnhjjs)

I started to do some sketchesAfter several attempts on changing the proportion to be normal looking, here is my sketch before I use the gestalt.
fig. 63, Full Sketch

After that, I make the gestalt by erasing the middle part of her body.
fig. 64, Using Gestalt

After some minute thinking, I began to realise, "why did I make a donut plushie?" Because I think it's to abstract and random, I start to brain racking a little bit more. Then I came up with an idea of making an earth plushie, and so here goes my final sketch.

fig. 65, Earth Plushie, source; (https://pin.it/65xBer4)
fig. 66, final sketch

    After the final sketch, I started to colour my design, so here's how my design finaly look like;

fig. 67, coloured sketch
fig. 68, digitized version

After Mr. Charles gave me feedback on how my gestalt should be done, how the thing with gestalt should make a meaning, this is my final outcome;
fig. 69, gestalt final

The design is about a woman hugging on earth, which is her place to live. The woman holds closely the earth because she loves her place. The mask refers to the COVID-19 pandemic. She's hugging the earth because she miss her earth being fine.

fig. 70, Gestalt in PDF

EMPHASIS

Thinking of Emphasis, the first thought in my mind is this series called Girl From Nowhere. Lots of the episodes use emphasis, but the one that gave me inspiration is an episode where all of the main character became black and white and the main character dye her hair and the only colour in her world is her hair;
    I'm also inspired from the series MV in season 2. The MV is about the main character's blood transfering which contain immortality. When I saw the MV, I think about the concept of "blood transferring."
fig. 72, Season 2 Intro, source; (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ssD-jey78)

    Then I gain a though to make a concept of human bloods make plants colour. I discovered some hand poses in Pinterest.
fig. 73, Hand Dripping with Gold, source; (https://pin.it/2cOVgqZ)

fig. 74, Hand Reference, source; (https://pin.it/3Q9X3ut)

Here is my sketch of my Emphasis idea;
fig. 75, sketch

Then, I started to digitalized it. I want to choose second hand, but I'm afraid the focal will split into 2 part. So, I used hand 1 instead.  It was good at first, but I struggled to colour it, so I changed my hand into this;
fig. 76, Hand
 So, here's my output;

fig. 77, Digitized Version

    It tells a story about death. I use the rose as the emphasis because rose have the meaning to bring loose to a funeral. Over all color of roses, I choose red, because it has more connection to the dripping blood. The red dripping blood on the hand, refers to human's death.
    It can also be represented as something that tells "human's blood make plants grow." Researchers said a decomposing human body release huge amount nutrition for plants to grow. We all know that, when our bodies dead, they'll started to decompose, which can make plants grow.  That's why, I made the flowers become to have color because of the dripping blood.

REPETITION / MOVEMENT

So, I was thinking of making a movement with repetition. The first thing that I came up in my mind is a falling domino.

So, I came up with a sketch;
fig. 80, Sketch idea 1

I thought it was too simple and basic, so I made another idea. The second idea is about a gumboil machine with bubblegum that move out from the tongue.

fig. 81, Sketch idea 2

I was so confused on which one should I make. Then, I asked Mr. Charles, and he suggested me on making the domino one, but with a better idea, not the basic one. It should tell what we want to represent. I suddenly came up with an idea about toxic parents / unhealthy parenting. I was thinking of changing the domino into books, and here is my idea;
fig. 82, Idea
Then, I started to make my sketch and here it is;

fig. 83, sketch

After I did some adjustment to the sketch, I started to color it, and here is my outcome;

fig. 84, colored
As I got my feedback from Mr. Charles, I adjust the perspective a bit, and add some shadows, and here's my final outcome:
fig. 85, final outcome
I made it to look like a parents who are blindfolded, which represent on parents who can't understand their child. I make them too look like as if everything have to be their child's doing, their child took all responsibility. The boy in the back as a child who act as the toxic parenting victim. I want to show the child's emotion, fear. The books themself represented as "demands," it can be achievement, works, economy, health, etc. It also contain both of the principles, movement and repetition.

fig. 86, Movement PDF
HARMONY

The first thing in my mind when it comes to harmony is food! I was inspired with some food photography that I usually found in Instagram.

fig. 88, food photography 1, source; (https://twitter.com/jetvillalife/status/988284891061092352)

So, I'm planning to make something similar like that, but highlighting on a theme of food. In this case, the theme I choose was Japanese Festival Foods.
fig. 89, Draft 1

As my feedback, Mr. Charles said that I should change the food to be more unusual, maybe I can use weird food. I searched some weird food in Google but they looked so disgusting for me. I don't have the guts to draw them. :') So, I was reminded on a recent news that appear in my digital news app, it's about a restaurant that sells human meat. So I use human meat as my "unusual and weird food." I tried to make the plate arrangement, so here it is;
fig. 90, Process 1
I think the table color is to light, so I make it bolder.
fig. 91, Process 2
I add some blood spill to make the table look dirty, as if it was from the food.
fig. 92, Process 3
So, I draw some weird food combined with some body's part, and this is how it looks with base color.
fig. 93, Process 4
I used the digital painting method to create some shadow and highlight, making it a little more realistic.
fig. 94, Process 5
So, here is my final:
fig. 95, final

The topic is about human meat dishes. Inspired from my local news about a restaurant that sells human meat mixed in their dishes that I read, I want to remind that when we buy a food please be careful and mindful of the ingredients. Some food may look similar to normal food, but who can really know what is it. The harmony principle located in the mood, theme, placement of the food, and kind of food that I drew.
fig. 96, harmony in PDF

UNITY

Speaking of unity the first thing that came in my mind are those cliche hands pose forming unity and diversity of different races and ethnics:

They do have a literal meaning of "unity," but they also hold the principle of unity in design term. So, I was inspired to make something like that, but with a different statement. I try to think, "What show a similar thing about hands gathered in center other than about unity in diversity?" Suddenly I remembered about my parents' friend story, which in the story, their friend was death caused by COVID-19. So, I was inspired to make something that talks about death. So, I made a sketch.

It's about a coffin, with hands holding roses gathered in center. When making this design the first concept I actually want to make is about "Death Unites People," it's actually mean to do a little sarcasm. Anyway, here's my digital sketch:
fig. 99, Digital Sketch

As time went on, I started to think that my design doesn't really tell what I'm going to tell. So, I planned to modify the meaning, I want to tell about, "Whoever you are, you will die one day, no matter what skin color you have." I also removed the square corner, I want to make a full circle, so here's my attempt of doing the base color:
fig. 100, Base Coloring

After that, I gave some shading to the colors. I modified the central part of the coffin. I actually want to make something that tells a universal symbol of death / funeral, so I googled and do some researches about symbols.
fig. 101, Death Symbols, source;(https://pin.it/GFqpbDG)

After I did some research, I found out that there are plenty type of symbols! It can be cultural, religion, etc. I'm so confused and can't decide which one is universal, so instead of using those symbols there, I only use the word "RIP." I also add some blood drips and scars. I want to make the meaning change into something that describe it more, "Death Hurt Those Who Mourn." I'm happy with what I finally make and I think it tells the meaning, so here's my final outcome:

fig. 102, final outcome
In this unity exercise, I want to make something that describe "Death is a Painful Loss." I made it circular to make more sense of unity, because we should gather into one to give prayer to the one that leave. I make the background looks like a hole to make it like going to somewhere unknown, out of our reach. It also can mean as a hole used to hurried the coffin. I make the coffin white so it doesn't blend with the background and has a contrast with the background. White coffin also known to describe a purity. I used different colors of hand to give the impression about "not only certain race," I want to make it universal. I use roses as the flower because most people know that roses are iconic for funeral, and the meaning of roses is to bring loose to a funeral. Roses also have thorns which also describe the "pain" more. I intentionally make scars and dripping blood over the hands to describe the "pain of a loss." Thus, this is my final result;

FEEDBACK

WEEK 1:
  • n/a
WEEK 2:
  • The contrast is good, it actually can be make larger but it's ok, no need to change
  • The gestalt should convey the meaning more, not just basic blanket. It should be more deeper meaning.
WEEK 3:
  • The emphasis is good, be sure to add the explanation.
  • For the movement the domino is good but should be upgraded with something more.
WEEK 4:
  • Need to adjust proportion and scale in domino, especially the kid in the back. Add some shadow if necessary. Out of that, it's a strong design.
WEEK 5:
  • The unity fits well. It has a very strong meaning.
  • The harmony should tell more, maybe change it into weird food(?)
WEEK 6:
  • n/a

REFLECTION
(back to top)

WEEK 1:
In this week, I know design principles and elements better. From a dot can become a fascinating design. I also just noticed that it's important to pay attention on using the elements when making a design. I also have to be more confident to ask for feedback so I don't regret it. :')

WEEK 2:
I'm proud of myself because I finally fulled up my courage to ask feedbacks! I got the feedback and I realized that I don't fully understand gestalt. For the contrast for me it may be not that hard, but I struggle with gestalt. It's not that hard to gain idea for contrast. I got a lot of idea for contrast, mostly in color contrast, but it's so hard to think something out of "normal" for gestalt. After the feedback session, my lecturer said that I should be clear with what will I say, so I try to make it clearer.

WEEK 3:
I got a lot idea for emphasis, most of the ideas I got are from the Netflix's series. I don't have much difficulty in making this design. Mr. Charles said that my expression in emphasis is really strong, which boost my self confidence better. I didn't expect Mr. Charles would chose the domino, I thought he'll chose the gum ball machine. I was given a feedback to make the meaning deeper. I like the feedback, it makes me think more.

WEEK 4:
In week 4, Mr. Charles reminded me to give some more observation to the scale and proportion. Also, he reminded me to add shadows so it'll look less monotonous for the coloring. Aside from that, I'm happy that Mr. Charles liked my idea. He thought it's so strong. I'm so excited to explore more!

WEEK 5:
Speaking of unity and harmony, I think they're both similar and hard to differentiate. Thanks to the live explanation, I can now fully understand their difference. At first, I don't really know the difference, so I accidentally made the same principle, unity. It was a lot of struggle if Mr. Charles didn't explained to us that day. I'm glad he gave us a clear explanation.

WEEK 6:
Class finish earlier today, which give us a chance to finish our design. Mr. Charles is open for feedback giving, but I haven't done much process from the last feedback, so I refused to ask. Anyway this exercise is a fun thing to do. It has lots of variations of challenge (easy-hard). I get a lot from this exercise. I finally understand things I don't know before, such as gestalt, harmony, and unity. I also found out that I enjoy making designs related to social issues.
