Lecture 7: Sense of Place

The lecturer explained that as a designer, our roles are mainly to solve problem which varies from personal goals to community events, and from a corporate function to world-changing projects, with all through, visual communication means.

As a designer, the weapon to solve our problems are by being observant, since it'll give ideas. Being observant means being attentive to your surroundings, paying attention to the details and being analytical about them. Source of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings, etc.

For example, natures can takes a very important role in design:

  • The book is inspired from the hook and loop concept which George de Mestral found of the burdockburrs (seeds) that kept sticking to his clothes and his dog's fur.
  • The building is inspired from bird nest
  • The dress is inspired from wave
Then, Ms. Jinchi showed us a youtube video:

Observation is a way to obtain informations using our senses. It's important for us to know, feel, understand, analyse, and even plan what we want to do.

That's why observation is important for us designer, to make us clear with what we're facing, and how we solve it.

We can note our ideas that we've observe and make a mindmap of it to make an easier brainstorming.

The simplest ways to express sense of places are by documenting your observation - photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, mindmap, etc. We also can explore other mediums, such as, collage, illustration (manual/ digital), scale model, the possibilities, etc. Here're some examples:

At the end of the lecture, Ms. Jinchi showed us a video:

“All we have to believe is our senses: the tools we use to perceive the world, our sight, our touch, our memory. If they lie to us, then nothing can be trusted.”

As written in the MIB, we have to observe our surroundings, and study all the visuals that you find interesting and appealing. Apply design principles that have been learnt!

The post must contain:
  1. Recap of Project 2 brief
  2. Design process:
  • Visual research
  • Idea exploration and description
  • Final outcome in PDF and short rationale
  • Feedback by the lecturer
  • Reflection on the project
IMPORTANT: Any photographs as final submission or idea exploration should be ensured that they are clear, and taken from various angles and properly cropped.

VISUAL RESEARCH

Before stepping out to creating my concept, I searched some artists' artworks about sense of place. I was very mesmerized with these designs I found:

fig. 8, source; (https://pin.it/8IOGdQd), Week 8 (12/10/2021)

It resemble me back to the time where I travel to places. I remembered I travel to countless places with my family, and I scrolled all the pictures and videos I had taken and posted on Instagram. I found some places that's very memorable to me, and here're the places:

From countless places that I visited, my favorite is Venice. Venice is a city in Italy. What's unique about Venice are there're surrounded by water, and there're so many shops there. What made Venice interesting for me is not about the gondolas, water, or their magnificent building, but some small mask shops, so I'm planned to draw a small mask shop that I visited, and here's a photograph that my dad took back then:

So, I searched for some reference photo, since I only have few :( :
  • MASK SHOPS

  • VENETIAN MASKS
There're plenty of them, so I'll just screenshot and display some:

IDEA EXPLORATION

So, based on the reference, I wanted to express my sense of place by drawing a little shop that sells venetian masks. Venetian masks are usually items that are used on Masquarade Ball.

Although the masks visual appearance reflect elegance, and classical ornaments. There're lots of shops that sell these masks, we can found it everywhere, from street shop, small shop, to a classy shop, and in my perciption the shops are kind of mysterious and magical.

When I stepped in front of the store, I feel such a warm feeling and I feel as if I stepped in on a fairytale book. It brings a surreal feeling for me, so I want to make my drawing as if the place is filled with magic.

The masks themself made me feel like as if they're a person, so I want to make an illustration that the masks are like talking to me.

I planned to use warm tone color to reflect the warmth that I feel. They may feel mysterious, and mysteries are identical to cold color, but since I don't feel the mysterious feeling dominate, I used the "warmth".

After finishing my concept, I started to make the lineart. I'm not really used to do illustration with line, but I want to draw it like a classical children book, so here's my work:
fig. 16, line art, Week 10 (26/10/2021)

I started to base color my work. I used 100% solid color without any shadow / highlights:
fig. 17, base color, Week 10 (26/10/2021)

After finishing the solid color, I started to add the shading and highlights. For the final touch, I add the light source, where the magic shows:
fig. 18, gradient, Week 10 (26/10/2021)

I add some yellow light and used "dissolve" effect and reduce the layer fill and opacity to gain like a magic dust vibes:

Finally, here's my final:

What I made is a design that represent a little mask shop in Venice. I want to represent my feeling of the place by doing so. The created design use principle of contrast, harmony, and emphasis—which is the main element I want to show. I want to emphasis it on the masks and the little girl, as if the place made me feel like I spend my night interacting with them and the world only emphasised on us. I use the dark color scheme to let the classical feeling out. I use yellow as my light to give a warmth feeling of the place.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 8:
Independent Learning Week

WEEK 9:
  • Public Holiday!
WEEK 10:
  • General Feedback: Do observe things exist in the place chosen. It doesn't have to be the bigger picture but it can be some stuff in the details.
WEEK 11:
  • Specific Feedback: Great technique and composition! Add more a description why is it emphasised on you and the mask.

REFLECTION

WEEK 8:
I just watched the lecture material about sense of place. The point about sense of place are being able to feel and understand a place that we can get from observation, documentation, etc. and express it. I remembered on Week 7, Mr. Charles showed the class about the VR thingy, I was amazed that I suddenly understand about sense of place better. I can feel the details after remembering little things from my vacation photos, maybe that's what sense of place means. And from there I began to understand about this task to convey to the audience, what the designer feels in a visualized place.

WEEK 9:
I watched the visual analysis lecture. I learned about visual analysis. I started looking for places and going through my past memory documentation, photos and videos form that place. I was surprised how deep it felt when we enjoyed a place and got a feel for the situation. As if every place I searched has its own meaning and uniqueness.

WEEK 10:
After observing my friends' works during the class, I immediately gain an inspiration to make and finish my work. In my opinion, it's a very adventurous things to do, because it makes me get back to the "feel" of traveling to places, which is really nostalgic. Telling our expression to a certain place is fun. At first I thought it was difficult because I had to draw 100% of the same buildings, but it didn't have to be like that, and the approach can be as simple as it can be, at least we're expressing it.
