WEEK 3 (11/04/2022) : Film Sound
fig 1.1, audio triangle, WEEK 3 (11/04/2022)

Audio triangle: an audio setting that supports the action and engages the spectators.
  • SPEECH : Dialogue, Voice Over
    • Dialogue: Conversation between characters in movie.
    • Voice over: The voice of an unseen narrator speaking.
  • SOUND EFFECTS : Ambience, hard or cut effects
    • Ambience: Audio refers to the background noise present at a given scene or a location.
    • Sound we hear at the movies that isn't dialogue or music is a sound effect.
  • MUSIC
    • To enhance the dramatic narrative and the emotional impact.
OTHERS:
DUBBING / automated Dialog Replacement (ADR)
Process of re-recording dialogue after the filming process to improve audio quality or reflect                 dialogue changes.

FOLLEY
A sound effects technique for synchronous effects or live effects.

WEEK 4 (18/04/2022) : Storyboarding
fig 1.2, storyboarding, Week 4 (18/04/2022)

Storyboarding -> Visualisation
When the scene has a complicated action involved or few perspective point of view, storyboard is the most effective way to map out the scene.
fig 1.3, history, Week 4 (18/04/2022)

What's the purpose?
  • Show IMPORTANT ACTION
  • Continuity/ Editing Point
  • Shot Composition
  • Indicate CAMERA ANGLE/ MOVEMENT
  • Map out the scene
How to?
  1. Story breakdown
  2. Shot list
  3. Use floor plan for camera positioning
  4. Camera angles for each sequence can be indicated in floor plan. Sc/sh numbers are written beside the camera symbol.
  5. Start from EWS/ WS, then cut in to characters/ objects.
  6. Cut between action and reaction.
  7. Cut to different framing and different angle shot.
  8. Use cut away to enhance storytelling and creating mood.
  9. Insert cut away or C.U shot as transition for new scene.
  10. Cut to different framing and different angle shot.
Tips:
  1. Stage subject among foreground, midground and background to create contrast in size and distant, focus, brightness and colour.
  2. Separate space by using planes as foreground, midground and background which contain many depth cues including size change, textural diffusion, tonal and color separation, up/down position, and overlap.
WEEK 6 (03/05/2022) : Audio Editing - Sound Shaping with EQ

HZ AND DB
fig 1.4, source; https://youtu.be/-E1SDl9vLo8, Week 6 (03/05/2022)
  • Human being able to hear sound because of frequencies that ranged from 20Hz - 20.000Hz. 7 subsets of frequencies used to help define the Ranges.
  • Decibels (dB): The threshold of human hearing is measured as 0dB SPL (sound pressure level) and the threshold of pain 130dB SPL.

fig 1.5, 7 subsets of frequencies and decibels charts, Week 6 (03/05/2022)

MONO VS STEREO
  • Mono sounds are recorded using single audio channel
  • Stereo sounds are recorded using two audio channels
SOUND EFFECTS
  • Phone Call sfx
    • Bring down BASS, TREBLE
    • Raise MID RANGE between 500Hz to 2kHz.
  • Muffled sfx
    • Usually by wrapping it with something.
    • BASS remain
    • TREBLE to the bottom
    • Raise MID RANGE to top.
  • Reverb sfx
    • Sound in SPACE.
    • Echo caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface.
    • Apply REVERB.
      • Decay Time: Specifies how many milliseconds the reverb takes to decay 60 dB.Longer values give longer reverb tails.
      • Pre‑Delay Time: Specifies how many milliseconds reverb takes to build to its maximum amplitude.
      • Perception:Simulates irregularities in the environment
      • Dry: To add subtle spaciousness, set the Dry percentage higher; to achieve a special effect, set the Dry percentage lower.
      • Wet: To add subtle spaciousness to a track, keep the Wet percentage lower than the Dry percentage.
WEEK 12 (13/06/2022) : SOUND DESIGN

4  Important Sound Design:
  1. Time stretching/ compression
  2. Pitch Shifting
  3. Reversing
  4. Layering
  • Time stretching/ compression

    • Change the length of audio without altering its pitch.
  • Pitch Shifting
    • Adjusting the pitch of an audio signal upwards or downwards, for both corrective (getting a vocal perfectly in tune, for example) and purely creative (changing the character of a drum loop, say) purposes.
  • Reversing
VIDEO SOURCE : https://youtu.be/DMNCoCDPGeo?t=99
    • The end of the audio will be heard first and the beginning last.
    • Changes the whole feeling and rhythm of the sound.
  • Layering
    • Arranging several separate sounds together, the overall effect is one single sound.

EXERCISES

EXERCISE LIST:

EXERCISE 1 - AUDIO DUBBING EXERCISE

I surfed on the Google Drive that Mr. Martin provide, I found a document file and a video file for our dubbing exercise.
fig 3.1, files, Week 3 (17/04/2022)

I began to dubbing the script using my phone.
fig 3.2, recording, Week 3 (17/04/2022)

First I put all my audio to the clip, also adjusted them.
fig 3.3, editing, Week 3 (17/04/2022)

Then I added the sound effects and final touch:

As what mentioned by Mr. Martin at the feedback session, I re edit the audio:

EXERCISE 2 - SOUND SHAPING WITH EQ EXERCISE

On Week 6, we were given task on creating some audio, using Adobe Audition. First I decided on which go with which effects:
  • Voice of phone call - parametric equalizer
  • Voice coming from inside of closet - muffled
  • Voice of big stadium - reverb
  • Voice of toilet/bathroom - reverb
  • Underground cave - reverb
Then, I create the phone call effect.

The muffled effect

EXERCISE 3 - AUDIO EDITING 3
After I watched the recorded lecture, I began to do my task:

EXPLOSION
I did this while watching the recorded lecture. It was very confusing at first, but  manage to follow it.
First, I do some editing to the original audio by adjusting the pitch and stretch.
fig 3.14, adjusting the original clip, Week 12 (13/06/2022)

I add the edited version to the first track and the original to the second track, and I make another copy for the third one and use a reverse on it. I add Fade In and Fade Out also as lectured.
fig 3.15, the multitrack, Week 12 (13/06/2022)

PUNCH
First, I import the file and make a copy of it. Then I adjust the audio, by stretching and decreasing the pitch
fig 3.16, punch edited, Week 12 (13/06/2022)

I made the audios stack with using layering to create the triple punches
fig 3.17, punch multitrack, Week 12 (13/06/2022)

ALIEN VOICE
I wanted to do something fun, so first, I reverse the audio.
fig 3.18, track reversed, Week 12 (13/06/2022)

Then, I adjusted the pitch to be high because in my opinion, alien sounds are usually high pitched, and short.

FINAL:

FEEDBACKS

WEEK 7 (09/05/2022): AUDIO DUBBING EXERCISE (SOUL)
  • Overall good
  • Add fading effects (in and out) to the audio
  • More ambience sounds, traffics, people

    REFLECTION

I learnt on doing audio and inserting them on a short animation movie. It was quite difficult actually, because I can't mimic man sound and the video also quite fast, and hard to match with the audio. But as I worked on, I found a small tricks, it's by following the mouth gesture of the characters. But still, this exercise is a little bit challenging to do, especially for me who isn't really familiar with audio dubbing.
