WEEK 9 (23/05/2022) : Color Correction

From the previous class, we were tasked to do the "aka demo emo," then, in this week, we were tasked to do the color correction.

fig 2.3, color correction, Week 9 (23/05/2022)

Using the lumetri scopes, I study the color and try to adjust from the lumetri color. I noticed that the sequence I want to follow, all RGB points are located in 80-90.

EXERCISES

WEEK 1 - TASK A: Stop Motion and Visual Effects
Mr. Martin tasked us to watch some stop motion videos. I always thought stop motions are boring, until I watched these;
fig 4.1, stop motion1, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

It's a stop motion made by PES. I choose this because of the concept, it brings about arcade game, old game for example like Pac-man, Frog Jump, etc, and the style used really suited the stop motion video, oldish. The art direction here is very clear, they wanted to show about arcade games using stop motions. I like they way the concept designed, using real life items which make it looked like a traditional stop motion. What surprised me and give me the Woah is the way of the flow it happened. The audio did really well to support the stop motion videos. Lastly, the motion looked so flawless and flowed continuously, which won't happen at every stop motion.
fig 4.2, stop motion 2, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

The purpose (art direction) of the video here is very clear; about climates. It's to urge viewer to stop plastic pollutions, especially in water; sea. Again like the previous one, the artist created the stop motion video using items, probably hand crafted. The style looked traditional and semi realistic, but then the motion is really flowed and that's what makes it looked so good. I really like the color board, using vibrant color to describe the environment, and bland colors to describe the bad things, like the plastic trashes, humans, boats.
fig 4.3, stop motion 3, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

The creator used a low-cost item; clays. But then, the creator did an amazing work of it, and it was his first time! I'm very amazed with it. I like the character, look so cute, and the animation flow support the characteristic of the character to be more developed. Soft and slow, which become the art direction. The audio sound did suit well with the stop motion video, also the traditional style suits well with it.

WEEK 1 - TASK B: Visual Effects
To be honest, I don't really understand what it means about visual effects, so I searched it on Google.
fig 4.4, visual effects, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

"Ohh, they're the one that usually appeared on Sci-Fi movies," said my mind. Thus, I began to searched some visual effects example on YouTube.

fig 4.5, visual effects 1, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

So, the reason I chose this is because I've already followed an instagram famous content creator "Lights are Off" who is a 3d visual artist for a while. I've just realize that this's also one of an example of visual effects. As far as I know, it's a short 3D motion graphics video about horror and various kinds of fears that are happening in the current trend. The art direction is about horror and fear. This's one the creator's main character, much like a cat, but the character design was made with a simple character form, whilst able to bring fear to the audience.  The color used also a big impact in the whole video, the creator used less pigmented color, mostly with pale white and black. It's a simple and short thing but it can hit the audience is the reason that made me choose this work.
fig 4.6, visual effects 2, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

The first thing that came in thought about Visual Effects short video is this song. It's a collaboration of Coldplay and BTS and the concept is outer space. I chose this video because of the theme, style; it was my favorite theme, space. The art direction is quite clear also, it tells a story about galaxy population to show their break free about singing. The visual effects can be found are from the hologram styled person, 3D animations of other person than BTS and Coldplay member, and the nature effects. The character design used are spaced themed character, which make them looked sci-fi.
fig 4.7, visual effects 3, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

I chose this Visual Effect Video because I want to choose something other than MV like the other 2. The reason I chose this is because I like the art direction. It's like trying to tell a story about writer who's searching for ideas for her book. Then, suddenly her imaginations, which shown by Visual Effects came like a real thing. The color vibes look very cyber, as if it's in a digital world, shown by the fish color and the sky color which are very vibrant. The style used are advanced style, what I mean from advanced is the VFX creator creates the character looked somehow if it was real, not animation looking characters, these can be shown by the fish, tentacles.

WEEK 6 - Decide Final Project

✅ Define the theme(choose one):
For the theme, I wanted to talk about people as social beings which need other people presence, more likely to be emotion themed.

✅
Watch lots of stop motions (online).
I watched some stop motions:

✅ Choose the type of stop motion: Clay? Paper cut-out? Lego? (https://www.nfi.edu/stop-motion-animation/)
✅ Write ONE paragraph of your story outline.
✅ Present 3 references.

I broke down my ideation in the proposal:
fig 4.8, proposal, Week 8 (22/05/2022)

Then, I create my storyboard:
fig 4.9, storyboarding, Week 9 (29/05/2022)

I started my shooting. I tested in a random item at first:

I understand the concept, I started to proceed in making the shooting. So, this is my first draft:

But then, the art direction is kinda different from the planned one, so I do a second reshoot, and I came out with these, with a total of 381 shots:
fig 4.13, second shoot, Week 12 (15/06/2022)
fig 4.14, second shoot quick preview, Week 12 (15/06/2022)

So, this is my first draft, which I think still very raw, because I haven't proceed in the editing the color and sound, but overall concept it'll look like this:
fig 4.15, draft 1 (rough ver.), Week 13 (20/06/2022)

Mr. Martin pointed out some things that needed but isn't there (Refer to Week 13 Feedbacks). Thus, I have to do a reshoot, which I did on Saturday Week 13 with a total of shots:
fig 4.16, third shooting, Week 13 (25/06/2022)

Finished the shooting and grouping, I proceed on downloading the files and compile them in AfterEffects. I planned to edit the color darker, to make the video feels darker.
fig 4.17, coloring, Week 13 (25/06/2022)

Then I proceed with color correction and adding BGM. This is the track I use.
fig 4.18, BGM music, source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DOmXCSJ-TI, Week 15 (04/07/2022)

So, this is the second draft of my shot:
fig 4.19, draft 2 (edited), Week 15 (04/07/2022)

Finally, after that, I add another last touch, and here's my final:

FEEDBACKS

Week 9 (23/05/2022):
For the good part maybe use colorful or like magical, butterflies, those kind of thing, maybe.

Week 10 (30/05/2022):
  • Scene 1 character seems like not really struggling, maybe make him reach out to someone but rejected by people he reached.
  • The last scene can have some kind of continuous with the people from scene 1, maybe for example, the kid give balloon to the character to help him, etc.
Week 13 (22/06/20):
  • Need to show the mc needs help, the kid wanted to help, but pull away by the adult.
  • Reshoot? yes.
Week 15 (07/07/2022):
  • Better compare to the 1st version
