Week 1 (28/03/2022): The Briefing

  • What's a Video and Sound Production:
A time based project, consist of 3 learning objective; pre-production, production, and post production (preparation, shooting, editing).

1. Pre-Production
-idea development, story, storyboard, visual reference, location/props.

2. Production
-lighting, costume, principal shooting.

3. Post Production
-offline editing, online editing, audio editing.

Week 2 (04/04/2022): Lecture 2 - Framing and Storyboard

Mr. Martin explained us some brief history of videography.
  • When motion cameras were invented : simple - straightforward.
  • Filmmakers soon realised that audience saw 3d, but the film was flat.
  • Then, the action were broken down into some shots and sequences (separation), and decide which to show and not (editing).
Cinema technique is all about manipulating shots and sequence that isolating part of it to look at and in what order to see them.

Cinematography terms:
  • Motion picture/Film/Video = made up of many shots.
  • Each shot requires placing the camera in the best position for that particular moment in the narrative.
  • Shot is continuous view shot by one camera without interruption.
  • Sequence = series of scenes, or shots, complete in itself.
  • Scene = the place or setting where the action is laid.
  • A scene may consist of series of shots or sequences depicting a continuous event.

SHOTS

Type of shot sizes:
  1. Extreme wide shot
  2. Wide shot
  3. Medium wide shot
  4. Medium shot
  5. Medium close-up shot
  6. Close-up shot
  7. Extreme close-up shot
WIDE SHOT (WS)
  • Includes the entire subject and important objects in the immediate surroundings
  • If it's used at the beginning of a scene it's often called an "establishing shot”
MEDIUM SHOT (MS)
  • Shows the subject that are important to understanding
  • Hands and the lower half of his body fall outside the frame.
MEDIUM CLOSE UP SHOT (MCU)
  • Midway between waist and shoulders to above the head.
  • Highlight certain expressions.
OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT (OS)
  • Shows the subject from behind the shoulder of another person.
EXTREME WIDE SHOT (EWS)
  • Shows a broad view of the surroundings around the character and conveys scale, distance, and geographical location.
  • Used to show where character is in his/her environment.
MEDIUM WIDE SHOT (MWS)
  • Usually cut off across the legs above or below the knees.
CLOSE UP SHOT (CU)
  • Used to isolate the most important part of the subject.
  • Generally the head, or small object.
  • It emphasizes facial expression, details of object.
EXTREME CLOSE UP SHOT (ECU)
  • Single out a portion of the face magnifies a detail.
  • To focus on important detail either to increase the drama or impact on a situation or to allow the viewer to see necessary picture information more clearly.
fig 1.1, example of shots, Week 2 (04/04/2022)

CAMERA ANGLE
Compositions > Rule of Thirds
fig 1.2, example of rule of thirds, Week 2 (04/04/2022)
  • (SUBJECT COMPOSITION)
    • Facial modelling is best when subject is turned 45º (¾ angling) to the camera.
    • Front and side of the face, if properly lighted will appear round and eyes are displayed fully.
fig 1.3, composition for subject, Week 2 (04/04/2022)

  • (ROOM COMPOSITION)
    • 3 Dimensional solidity is most pronounced when 2 or more surfaces are photographed.
    • Angling the camera in relation to the subject so that two sides of the objects are viewed, results in the most effective rendition

fig 1.4, composition for room, Week 2 (04/04/2022)
  • (SURROUNDING)
    • Angle the camera so that parallel lines diminish and converge preferably toward the right.
    • This is to ensure that viewer’s eyes are carried into distance.
fig 1.5, composition for surrounding, Week 2 (04/04/2022)

Camera Height
fig 1.6, camera height, Week 2 (04/04/2022)
  • EYE LEVEL
    • The eye level of an observer
  • LOW ANGLE SHOT
    • Camera is tilted upward to view the subject.
    • Make a character look bigger, stronger, or more noble.
    • Gives the impression of height.
  • HIGH ANGLE SHOT
    • Camera is tilted downward to view the subject.
    • Make a character look smaller, younger, weak, confused, or more childlike.
Screen Direction
  • Constant screen travel depicts subject motion in one direction only.
  • Series of shots of a person walking, a car driving, a plane flying – should move in the same direction to show progression.
Static Screen Direction: 180º rule
Enforces the camera stay on a horizontal axis and not cross sections so that it will disorient the viewer. The horizontal axis is called “ Line of Action”

Week 3 (11/04/2022): Storytelling in Film

2 elements:
  • Character Event
  • What happen to the character
Plots -> form story.

Three Act Structure:
  • Beginning : setup / introduction of a story
    • The "inciting incident"
    • Turn the story in a new direction
    • Sets up what Act Two is going to be
    • Raises the stakes
    • Reminder of the narrative enigma; presents the possibility of a different outcome
  • Middle : confrontation of a problem
    • The "Climactic Turning Point"
    • Protagonist's quest reaches critical mass
    • Possible solution is presented
    • Biggest cliffhanger: will the protagonist win or lose?
  • End : resolution of problem
    • Ending of climax
    • Answer to all obstacles / problems
    • Tying the loose ends

EXERCISES

EXERCISE LISTS:
1A. In Class Editing Exercise (MINTS) - WEEK 1
(back to exercise list)

After learning the demonstration that Mr. Martin showed, I mastered importing videos to Adobe Premier's timeline. First, I saved all the videos in a folder as Mr. Martin taught.
fig 4.1, downloading videos, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

Then, I started to make new file and exported them. I found a shorter way to do it, select and hold shift while choosing the next video sequences, then drag to the timeline bar. After I imported them all, I felt like I want to do more, so I add some effects, just basic effects, like video transitions, and audio fade.
fig 4.2, timeline preview, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

It was a lot fun to do, since I learned the shortcuts :>. Thus, I started to re-check things and exported the whole video. This's how it looked like:

1B. Independent Editing Exercise (DORITOS) - WEEK 1

Repeating the exact same steps from the in class exercise, I started to arrange the second advertisement; the Doritos. I downloaded all the videos.
fig 4.4, downloading videos, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

After downloading all the videos, I import them to Adobe Premier.
fig 4.5, importing preview, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

Then, I put them in a sequential order. Again, shift and drag😏... Then I rewatched from the beginning. I realized something weird. I just realized that, Mr. Martin scrambled the sequences!!😱 My bad...

Then, I started to watch them all one by one, back to 0, then to make life easier, I renamed the sequences.
fig 4.6, rename, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

Then I compiled them together. Now it's a sequential order :) I also add the effect because the flow is fast, I only add at the end
fig 4.7, reordering, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

Then, this is my final:
fig 4.8, final look, Week 1 (28/03/2022)

2A. Premiere Pro Exercise 1 (LALIL) - WEEK 2

As the first step of editing, I started to imported some files provided by Mr. Martin.
fig 4.9, importing videos, Week 2 (04/04/2022)

Then, I started with scene 1 shot 1 and started to select the area I wanted to trim, using the help of I and O shortcuts that Mr. Martin taught.
fig 4.10, scene 1 shot 1, Week 2 (04/04/2022)

It were fun things to do, as I started to get used to it and it wasn't really hard in my opinion. Thus, I started to finish off the whole scene; scene 1 and 2.
fig 4.11, finishing, Week 2 (04/04/2022)

To make it look nicer, I added a transition effect in the end, which lead the video to black background. Here's my final result. I was able to do it within 15 minutes, thanks to Mr. Martin's easy tutorial.
fig 4.12, final look, Week 2 (04/04/2022)

2B. Shooting Exercise 1 - WEEK 2

Mr. Martin tasked us to do some shooting exercises like instructed on fig 3.2. So, I planned to do it when I'm going out also, so it won't be just and ordinary shot.

I went to Kwai Chai Hong. It was my first time and it was very beautiful. Although the place is not quite  big, still it has variations of aesthetic spots.
fig 4.13, Kwai Chai Hong location, Week 2 (08/04/2022)

Using tripod, I took some shots there.
fig 4.14, Shots, Week 2 (08/04/2022)

Then, I arrange them in a sequential order. (maybe)😅. After I'm done, I downloaded my designated files and import it to Adobe Premier Pro.
fig 4.15, importing, Week 2 (10/04/2022)

After I arranged them, I add captions to mark which shot is which.
fig 4.16, caption editing, Week 2 (10/04/2022)
I did some adjustments:
fig 4.17, adjustment 2, Week 2 (10/04/2022)

I tried to add a music. Then, I export it.

3A. 3 Act Structure Exercise - WEEK 3

Mr. Martin shows some videos for us to decide which is the 3 act structure.
  1. Burrow
  2. Guang
  3. Lalin
fig 4.21, 3 Act Structure, Week 3 (17/04/2022)

3B. MV Exercise - WEEK 3

We were tasked on making a music video on our chosen song. We will work as a team for the dancing part, so first, we decide our song. Our chosen song is "BIGBANG - 뱅뱅뱅 (BANG BANG BANG) M/V". We chose this song because the choreography is not as difficult as other song, ok even thought it seems hard.
fig 4.22, chosen MV, Week 3 (11/04/2022)

I took some shots then I export it to my computer:
fig 4.23, 3 Exporting, Week 3 (17/04/2022)

Then, I added the first 7 scenes needed first to the Adobe Premiere. Then, I planned to improve on so I add more videos like bonus videos:

FEEDBACKS

WEEK 7 (09/05/2022): MV EXERCISE
  • All good, ok for submission
  • Just edit the color later at Week 8

REFLECTION

I had a lot of fun in this exercise, because I get to learn lots of thing about shooting, cinematography, those kind of things, and the best things is that I get to experience lots of place for my shooting exercises.
